You may be well aware that the next big thing is living in a tiny home…but is it practical? Is it sensible? And can a log cabin be used as a tiny home?

The Tiny Home Trend

Tiny homes are promoted by advocates such as the so-called “tiny-house movement” for a number of reasons. The most commonly mentioned reasons are those of affordability and environmental impact, as smaller homes tend to cost less and cause a less of an impact on the environment.

The concept of a tiny home has even inspired TV shows such as Tiny House Nation, which is increasingly popular on Netflix. Whatever the reason for choosing a tiny home, they serve a variety of purposes and can make a major difference in people’s lives.

Log Cabin vs Tiny Home

A fundamental distinction of a tiny home is that it is used a main place of residence and incorporates all aspects of a much larger home. For example, there will be a living area, a kitchen, a bathroom, and a bedroom. Through ingenious design, several of these locations may occupy the same physical space, e.g. a sofa pulls out and converts into a bed, allowing the living room and bedroom to be one and the same.

A log cabin, on the other hand, doesn’t have to include any of these features, but a custom designed log cabin allows the freedom to include any of the features that you desire. Even in a larger log cabin, ideas taken from tiny homes can lead to a better use of space.

Log cabins are not often used as main places of residence in Ireland as they tend to be built in the back garden of an existing home, but this in itself opens up other possibilities. Do you have a child that’s old enough to move out but isn’t quite ready to make the leap? Build a log cabin as a tiny home in your garden.

Do you have an elderly parent who wants to move close by but can’t find the right place to live? Why don’t you try a log cabin tiny home within the borders of your own property?

Facilities in a Tiny Home

As noted above, a tiny home contains all the rooms or areas you would find in a traditional home, and you might feel that a log cabin can’t match this. Running water, heating, electric and lights are all modern conveniences that a traditional log cabin would be unlikely to have – but with a modern log cabin the story is completely different.

Log cabins can be custom designed to incorporate every feature you require, and that includes connections to mains electric and water. Anything you can do in a brick and mortar home can equally be achieved in a log cabin.

By reducing the size to match that of a tiny home, you’ll need less heating and lighting, reducing your carbon footprint while still being able to do everything you would want to in a home. From the inside of a modern log cabin, you may not even be aware that you are inside a wooden construction, so a log cabin of any size is a perfect choice to create a home in.

When you choose Loghouse to create your log cabin, we can make sure that everything is taken care of, including connections to electric and water, and our expert team can also complete the plumbing work too.

How Tiny is a Tiny Home?

A tiny home is expected to have a floor area of less than 400 square feet but can be considerably smaller. Using a log cabin to create a building of this size is a great choice, as wood is an easy material to work with at almost any size. “Small” homes can be more than twice this size, so the choice of how small your log cabin is will be entirely up to you, depending only on the physical space you have available and how closely you wish to adhere to the spirit of the tiny house movement.

Many traditional homes are three, four, or five times the size of a tiny home, and so getting used to the size constraints can be quite a challenge, but our team of expert designers are happy to help out. Thriving on challenges, they’re always looking for innovative solutions for making the most of any space available, so whatever size log cabin you might want, they’ll be able to make sure the interior space works well for you.

Is it Possible to Use a Log Cabin as a Tiny Home?

As you can see, it is certainly possible to have every feature you need to live in a comfortable manner within a log cabin as a tiny home. You’ll miss nothing from a regular sized house, other than space itself – but what do you use that space for, anyway?

If you want to experiment with living in a tiny home, a log cabin is the ideal way to get started and become accustomed to tiny living.
